Extrawheel Single Wheel Trailer
The Extrawheel has a superb simple design which works
The single wheel Extrawheel trailer was an unorthodox choice, emerging from a small Polish company to challenge the established BOB trailer. On further comparison we were attracted by the simplicity of it’s design, it’s lightness and the 26 inch wheel when compared to the heavy steel frame of the BOB and it’s small wheel.
The benefits of the Extrawheel are multi-fold. Over rough ground the BOB trailer (Mark used one at the beginning of the trip back in 2007) was more susceptible to bouncing off the ground on it’s spring suspension than the Extrawheel which was better at tracking over bumps. You can see the trailer in action in this video:-
The attachment mechanism of the Extrawheel is ingenious with no bolts or clips. A tensioned piece of spring steel attaches to a specially designed rear wheel quick release with the bearings cleverly built in. The old model Extrawheel (shown in the video above) fell down on long term durability. The fabric hood and netting wore out we are talking after 7000km of abuse.
Newer versions of the Extrawheel have taken into account the feedback from cyclists testing the trailers and now the new, slimmed down, simplified pannier version is looking a much more durable beast (shown in the photo above). The iron frame has been reinforced and there are now also replaceable fork bearings which will prolong the life of the fork.
The panniers which can be bought with the Extrawheel are also at the forefront of the industry, made by Crosso, they take the best bits of the competitors such as Ortlieb’s stalwart waterproof panniers and add durable rip-stop fabric, removable side pockets and handy storage in the lid of the pannier. I would definitely say the Extrawheel is the best trailer choice for on or off-road touring and has superseded the BOB counterpart by evolution of design.
