Hello, wonderful account. I know this is an old post but I have a few questions. I mountain biked in the south of Armenia in the mid-90's and loved it. I was wondering if you are still in the area and if you have contact information for Tom and Tigran? I would like to hear more about where they bike and if they ever lead any tours. I don't live in Armenia anymore but would like to make a trip. Thanks for your help.

I think it boils down to luck really. Yours looks good although I'm not keen on putting the hole in the middle. Now, I've put a wedge of foam under one side to see if it balances out a bit, because although the lacing was better, it didn't fix the problem. I'm going to try this and then say bollocks to it and get a new one if necessary. Normally, apparently they are great and rarely go out of shape.

Funny - this echoes a conversation I was having with someone else, about something else, just a couple of hours ago. We were trying to justify the existence of literature (as you do on a hungover Saturday morning) and I argued that certain sentences in certain books have spoken my own experience back to me in a way I'd never thought of before - giving me an additional perspective from which to look at the same thing. And some books (I've ranted to you about them...) change your perception of the world altogether.

Which is why I think it's important to keep reading and rediscovering books - so that your worldview is constantly being realigned, questioned, challenged, enlarged and turned around. I'd actually reverse Eisner's statement - I think perception prefigures criticism, since we can only effectively criticize something once we've inspected it from several different angles, and been able to compare it with the rest of our experience.

You can't do this if you only ever read books by one author - or, to extend my analogy even further, never bother leaving the library. Experience is just as crucial as thought: even if you do 'engage with your experiences', as Sihon recommends, that's not going to do you much good if all you experience is the tired old metro-boulot-dodo routine.

(I think I'm basically agreeing with you, by the way.)

To some extent I agree with this, and yet I think it only really works in situations with a high enough income. Someone in poverty (a Nepali, let's say) still needs to purchase clothing, and it's hard to tell that person that they should cut back on calories to avoid mass produced Chinese stuff if that serves the purpose.

Hadn't seen the details on Goat's bike before. Interesting. I had been thinking that Jakub Postrzygacz's setup of a Pugsley with an extrawheel looked pretty good. (http://www.wildworks.co.nz/csr/photographs.php) That issue of needing to get replacement tires would be a pain, though, in either case.

A great blog - more of us need to get on our bikes. When we took our bikes to London I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it was cycling on the side streets away from the vehicles clogged up in traffic jams on the main roads.
It's faster by bike - go for it.

Ira's comment is actually not funny.. their minds work in mysterious ways, trust me on that one! In my opinion officials have zero interest in tourists, they're just a risk. They do not understand what holidays are and why on earth people come as tourists to their country. Take a camera and you are a spy anyway. Trust me on this, too..

Ira's comment is actually not funny.. their minds work in mysterious ways, trust me on that one! In my opinion officials have zero interest in tourists, they're just a risk. They do not understand what holidays are and why on earth people come as tourists to their country.
Hi Mark, I think your walk in Iran is partly inspiring that one. Also when I went there I wish I had spent more time to go off the beaten track rather than rushing through towards India. I met some guys crossing the border from Georgia to Turkey who had been walking in the Zagros. I've got a good friend in Tehran who I really want to go over and meet who's really into his biking and stuff. If I'm over that way then I will certainly be in touch.

I found out in one of my recent lectures that sitting down to come up with ideas is much more difficult than 'collecting' them at the time they come to you. More reason to carry a notebook around. I am surprised more people don't do it. It's the only way I remember important stuff!

I butchered and laced my Flyer from new to make sure it did not go out of shape. I put my laces straight through the middle of the logo just under the top frame as I was worried about them fouling on the bottom frame or seatpost when the saddle is compressed. http://twitpic.com/2eyvwe

Have you found this to be a problem or was I worrying over nothing?

For implementing GTD you can use this web-based application:

Gtdagenda.com

You can use it to manage your goals, projects and tasks, set next actions and contexts, use checklists, schedules and a calendar.
Comes with a mobile version too, and with an Android app.

I've got a Genius LT (10... I can hear my wallet screaming already!) on order with my local Scott sole dealer here in Hong Kong and mid-December can't come a day sooner, though I'm still personally rather nervous on buying a bike "completely in the blind"... I would have wished Scott could have at least arranged for a demo bike (their HK dealer is a Scott Concept Store after all...) to be in this neck of the woods (well, tropical jungle anyway).

So I'm curious Andy... you say this bike is "light". Does it really feel like that considering the entire range of LT's from 10 to 40 barely have 2lbs difference, walking that fine line either side of 30lbs. Mind you... all other 7.5in travel bikes are at least 7 to 10lb heavier, so I guess relatively, the Genius LT is the sub-20lb full-suspension XC whippet bike in the looong travel class?

I think you're on to something there... I've pondered philosophy problems and brainstormed one of my best poster designs while cycling home. I think it's that special mix of concentration (needed to stay alive in London) and head-space where ideas can bubble up.

PS, very nice to meet you yesterday evening!

An interesting blog.
I must agree that when one is cycling, even if it is only for an hour or so for exercise, one's brain does go into a different mode/zone. I love the way one's thoughts butterfly from creative ideas to solutions to problems etc. etc.

That certainly is minimal. Do you know how many grams on average that saves in weight?
You should be shaving your legs now if you are going to enter XC mountain bikes races.

Mind maps sound like a developed version of 'flow charts' which we used when we first started teaching in the 70's! Very useful to get your thoughts organised.

It's funny how things always go round in circles!

I would say that in reality, I use a lot of lists, but when I first start a project I find myself needing to structure what is needed to make it happen and I find a mind-map to be a good thing for this. I then go back to this 'base' mind-map to keep on track with the lists.

I read an article recently that said that coffee makes you think faster but not deeper! I was pondering this thought coupled with internet-use and how I skip between tabs and get bored quickly. A vague thought at the back of my mind - I wonder if there is something to be said for thinking deeply versus shallow thinking and how we should do more deep thinking!- cycle touring is perfect for this.

Coffee goes really well with mountain biking actually. I had a mate in the York Uni Mountain bike club who took a flask of espresso with him. Probably not good for your heart though...?

What music are we talking here? and what brand of coffee? Favourite pen? Favourite weight of paper?

I then go back to this 'base' mind-map to keep on track with the lists.

I read an article recently that said that coffee makes you think faster but not deeper! I was pondering this thought coupled with internet-use and how I skip between tabs and get bored quickly. A vague thought at the back of my mind – I wonder if there is something to be said for thinking deeply versus shallow thinking and how we should do more deep thinking!- cycle touring is perfect for this.

Coffee goes really well with mountain biking actually. I had a mate in the York Uni Mountain bike club who took a flask of espresso with him. Probably not good for your heart though…?

What music are we talking here? and what brand of coffee? Favourite pen? Favourite weight of paper?

A important point well made Andy.

Whenever the solution to a debate is offered as "Let's Google it / look it up on Wikipedia" I always joke that it would just ruin the chance for half an hour's meaningless discussion.

But perhaps it's not meaningless after all. Here's to Star Trek and serendipity!

Totally in agreement there. It would be brilliant if trains were a bit cheaper + some way of taking bikes on trains for free.

I took a route which compromised mostly of smaller roads apart from a stint on the A509 into Olney and cycing into London. I went to Wellingborough, Olney, Leighton Buzzard, Dunstable, St Albans, but I took country roads when I could.

An excellent post, Andy. I agree that there does seem to be a movement towards promoting the use of the bicycle. We must keep up the momentum.

As you mention Amsterdam regarding bike use I will mention Vancouver. Vancouver has an excellent public transport service which includes buses, trams, sky trains, seabuses etc. The particularly great thing is one can take ones bike on ALL these services without prior booking etc. The buses have a bike rack on the front on which you can just lock your bike for free if you need to include motorised transport into your journey.

I think we need to promote easier access to taking bikes on our public transport without the fuss of having to book it prior to journey - bring back the 'guard's van'

Best wishes
Liz
P.S. What route did you take to London?

Just caught up with you in a mid-day newspaper.
You are doing great. I wish you all the luck.
Enjoy your stay in India.
You are right - Indian food can be addictive. On your other experiences in India. I hope you get to witness unimaginable kindness and friendliness too.

Cheers!
PS: Looks like you are riding a Trek (or may be I got it wrong).

Hi,

Because Climate Change is a Type of Air Pollution. When people think of air pollution, they most often associate it with the sort of dirty discharge that can be readily seen coming from the smokestacks of coal-fired plants or even the particulate matter that is emitted from automotive tailpipes. However, the most common and potentially dangerous gases that threaten life on Earth are actually greenhouse gases.

Carbon dioxide and methane, together, account for about 30% of the "greenhouse effect" that, at levels that had been steady since the end of the last ice age, keeps the Earth at the relatively comfortable temperatures that more life enjoys. However, while the levels of water vapor (which actually account for most of the greenhouse effect) have remained relatively stable, the amount of carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere has sky-rocketed, due largely to the burning of fossil fuels and the massive increase in the number of ruminant animals used for meat production.

I would probably recommend central asia for cycling as I have an armed escort babysitting me through all Pakistan. I mean everywhere, 2 policeman outside the hotel, following me around, looking over my shoulder at the internet.

It's not exactly fun so to speak.

Its a war thet seems to have sprung up from nowhere. No one i've spoken to seems to have had any idea of tensions before hand. From my perspective, this is just another example of how poorly the media covers real world events. It seems that to find out about genuinely important events that are emerging before they become disasters you really have to dig deeply into world news. I suppose the media is only interested in truely shocking and 'market-able' stories rather than emerging problems. Perhaps if there was more public awareness of rising tensions there would be more international pressure to remediate such unease? Was the tension more obvious when in the region?

On a more mundane note. Were you at the Harrington beer festival the other night? Thought I recognised you, but was surprised as it was my belief at the time that you were in Armenia. :-)

You two are an inspiration - I just hope you manage to capture the unconverted and make them realise what they are missing. And re-ignite others who have forgotten what good things in life are free.
I have been told that I am easily pleased, probably by people who need much stimulation to be happy, but I'm glad to be so.
This morning I went for a bike ride and indeed gained much pleasure from simple things - the birds singing (including the cuckoo), the fields full of new growth, the vistas along my route, climbing up Nevill Holt hill without getting off and the wind rushing by as I free wheeled down, passing the time of day with folk who were out and about. These are things I have enjoyed all through my life and reading Ben Child's reply on your previous blog reminded me of a very happy rural childhood where life was full of the outdoors and nature.
We must look after our planet for the generations to come.
GET A BIKE - HAVE FUN, MEET OTHER PEOPLE, GET FIT AND SPREAD THE WORD

Hi Andy,

Reading this made me think back to the times when we were younger and we used to go down to the brook at the bottom of the field behind your garden. As we got older and more brave we negotiated our way to the end where it went under the road and to a small waterfall to which we could move no further forward. The pinnacle was wading, crouched down through the tunnel, listening to the cars rumbling overhead before turning round. I lost count of the times we did this but it never got boring or dampened our enthusiasm for it.

Whilst I have now got used to a life of "home comforts" and convenience I still look back fondly on the times where we could be entertained by the countryside and would encourage everyone to take your advice above and enjoy it whilst it there.

Massive respect for what you are doing.

Great quotes Andy, the second in particular sums up exactly how I feel about the situation we are in. There seems to be a MASSIVE lack of wisdom in the way we as individuals and as a global community continue to live. Instead, greed is the overriding trait that motivates us. This completely relates to Tom's blog entry (Armenia and Current Affairs). Its interesting that while you are both apart you're still thinking similar things...

Yeah - completely agree that we saw some different possible(!) effects of climate change - the blackberries in July, the early harvest - but what I'm objecting to (with good humour) is the way you guys go on about bad weather - it just seems very British. It didn't rain all day everyday, there weren't blizzards in France, and there weren't tsunamis on Lake Geneva. We experienced a fair mixture of different weather. I think we need to be careful about imagining trends that aren't there too. For example, in the mid 19th Century there was a mini "ice-age" and the Thames froze over, which was a freak occurrence.

In low moments we all say, hell it's always raining isn't it?! If you go out looking for something you will invariably find it - much better to look at the longterm records, which I'll agree don't look particularly favourable.

Just because you found the Les Gets slopes almost unrideable doesn't mean anyone else did. :) he he.

Great blog, please help us conserve many more great places:
National parks and nature reserves are beautiful places that need to be preserved worldwide.

The most limiting factor in conservation world wide is the shortage of rangers: estimated at over 100,000 in developing countries. Currently no government or conservation organization in the world addresses this problem. That is why the Adopt A Ranger Foundation has been created: http://www.adopt-a-ranger.org

Help us spread the cause by visiting the Adopt A Ranger website and leaving a message on your park visits at: http://www.birdlist.org/phpbb and posting some of your picture of national parks at: http://www.nature-worldwide.info/phpbb

I guess Mark forgot about the plight of the wheat crops in France, where the corn was ripe in July (as a result of the hot spring) but there was too much rain to harvest it. I remember a 3 day window of clear weather where the entire landscape was filled with combine harvesters as they tried to get it all in before the rain returned (which it did).

I guess he also forgot the state of the trails in the mountain-biking resort of Les Gets which were almost unrideably rutted due to the heavy rain (and snow - in July!) making the ground soft. It had just finally dried out in the week before we arrived, leaving cracked, churned-up but solid ground (thanks to the unrelenting riders) rather than the smooth trails they usually enjoy for year after year. I lived there for 4 months and heard all this from my friends who have lived there for many, many years.

I would not hesitate to use the words 'climate abnormalities' to explain those two things, amongst others. Last summer was abnormally wet. We all know that rain is life-giving, but we also know that flooding kills people - so that's another sweeping generalization.

Is it not we remember in a generalised way? I'm sure we had the worst summer last year ( England 2007) that I can remember - day after day of grey though not necessarily cold. Also April was outstandingly sunny and unusually warm from my recollection.
What we need is weather recordings!!

Do you guys not remember the vast amounts of sun we experienced? I think what it comes down to is that it rains in Europe. Rain is life giving. If you want sun everyday, go to a desert. I certainly did not get wet almost every day. In fact I remember many days in which we chose to get wetter because it was so hot. I do not think we experienced any climate abnormalities.

Hello Tom and Andy - I have been reading and enjoying your adventures for months now and do worry if you chaps are well. I just wanted to say thank you both for letting the rest of the world in on your adventure. So few human beings ever get the opportunity to see humanity as you do and more importantly share it with the rest of us. The greatest change I have seen in your post over the months are less compliants about your physical hardships, even though they are much worse now, and much more acceptance and understanding or who you both are and the understanding that your purpose of the ride is truly showing that people around the globe for the most part are the same, yet different, and are good regardless of their wealth. You truly give us folks whom cannot physically do what you are doing a greater faith in us all.
I am in Wash, DC and puliing for you both along with my wife and two children. Be safe and keep the wind at your back!

Another wonderfully written account sir.

Miles Davis was a great comfort to me during the darker times of my travels in the past. Music is wonderful, the way it can transport you instantly to another place and time - really vital during a long cold time!

Also try Bill Evans if you haven't already discovered him. 'Peace Piece' is a firm favourite.

Also try Bill Evans if you haven’t already discovered him. ‘Peace Piece’ is a firm favourite.

I ran into Tom last weekend - literally ran into him, as I was running, saw this hirsute dude on his bike, and stopped to chat. I am a retired world traveller, who found his soul mate here in Istanbul, found a job and stayed. I teach at the aforementioned Istanbul Technical University. Anyhow, I hope your luck has changed and that you are on your way by now. If not, if there is anything we can do to help you guys out, please email me. I admire and envy you in equal measures. Have a wonderful trip.

Hi Mark, Tom & Andy,

Just a short note to say I think what you are all doing is absolutely fantastic !

Mark mentioned he was taking part in this, although I didn't realise just how big the event is until seeing the website.

I totally agree with Richard Corby's comments, particularly on raising the profile of wilderness and sustainable low-impact travel, but most of all on a different approach to life.

Enjoy the ride .. I'll certainly be watching with interest and recommending this site to everyone.

Ps Mark, I may have a couple of movie recommendations for you for a change when you're back, although you appear to be in one of Ridley Scott proportions already !

Tom, Andy and Mark

Just finished watching the first podcast - excellent! Congratulations on all of your efforts so far - you guys really are an inspiration!

We haven't forgotten (or abandoned) you and very much appreciate all you are doing to raise the profile of wilderness, sustainable low-impact travel and a different approach to life. You're excellent ambassadors for all three.

Look forward to your next update.

Best wishes from all at WFUK.

West from Swiss land must be lots more downhill than East which must be LOTS more uphill. And you get away from the Lederhosen, although remembering that picture outside the Bothy in Scottish land some of you might rather enjoy them.
Just throw a rope round the Tour de France Peloton as it goes steaming by and hang on.
Stiff upper lip and all that Chaps, remember you're British - and don't mention the war.

Andy - why head East or South? Why don't you just go UP? That's my best advice - maybe a small spell in orbit can help you acclimatise to the high altitude in the Alps.

Have you encountered any 'Hedge Wizards' or 'Trolls' that I hear they have in the continent? If so, has Tom cunningly painted any of them in exquisite detail yet using his cunningly hidden trout shaped brush?

Also, when you are in Geneva - Try and live up to the reputation of being typically English - a spot of hoolilganism here and there works wonders!

Good to have an update. Where's that podcast we are all waiting for? Joint decision making is difficult but work at it, listen to one another, be fair, accept the decision made and go forward. No holding grudges you need each other in the bad times. And at the end of the day your time is your own, enjoy your adventures. Just some motherly advice!!!!!!!!
Lots of love xxxxxx
